Salvador is a 'bright and vivid' citySalvador in Brazil is a beautiful city which tourists to the country should add to their list of destinations, according to one expert.

Writing in the International Business Times, Andy Hayes said that travellers should look beyond Rio de Janeiro to some of the other great places in Brazil.

In his list of six alternative destinations, Mr Hayes said that Salvador was "one of the brightest and most vivid stops in Brazil".

"As you walk down the sloping streets between squares, with the hustle and bustle of street vendors and the heat of the Brazilian sunshine, this might be the closest thing to paradise," he explained.

The historic centre of the city has been designated a Unesco World Heritage site thanks to fantastically preserved historic buildings.

Brightly-coloured houses and renaissance architecture line the streets of the old town, which was the first capital of Brazil between 1549 and 1763.

Other destinations which made it onto the list were Buzios, Ouro Preto, Paraty, Penedo and Tiradentes.
