TAPESTRY OF FRANCE

Guest Speakers will help you to make the most of your cruise as you discover the delights of the Channel Islands and France

17 May 2017 - 11 DAYS FROM £1499

From the delightful Channel Island of Guernsey head off for a voyage around France, which begins in the wine region of Bordeaux. The first of three maiden calls is made to Lorient, on the southern coast of Brittany, followed by a stop in Brest. Voyager heads to the ancient walled city of St Malo before an inaugural call to Rouen, inextricably linked with Joan of Arc, and on to Honfleur, where your cruise comes to an end.

GUERNSEY, CHANNEL ISLANDS - 18TH MAY 7:00AM - 4:00PM
guernsey.jpg

Guernsey’s captivating capital St Peter Port boasts a picturesque harbour, charming cobbled streets and an impressive royal fortress which has stood guard over the town for more than 800 years. Step inside Castle Cornet, where five museums piece together the story of the island’s history, or learn about Guernsey’s German Occupation during the Second World War at La Vallette Underground Military Museum. Evidence of this turbulent period can be seen amongst the island’s beautiful landscape, which is dotted with military bunkers and fortifications.

AT SEA 19TH MAY
BORDEAUX, FRANCE - 20TH MAY 4:00AM (OVERNIGHT) - 21ST MAY 2:00PM
bordeaux.jpg

Located on the banks of the River Garonne and nestled in the heart of the renowned Medoc wine region, Bordeaux is Voyager’s next port of call. Much of this elegant city, home to a treasure trove of 18th century architecture, is UNESCO-listed. With two days in port you’ll have plenty of opportunities to visit the lush vineyards and sample the fine wines they produce. St Émilion is another producer of excellent wines, and this medieval village is within reach. Here you can discover the cave of Émilion, a Benedictine monk who gave his name to the village, and admire the largest monolithic church in Europe.

LORIENT, FRANCE - 22ND MAY 8:00AM - 6:00PM
carnac-lorient.jpg

Voyager makes a maiden call to Lorient, located on an immense natural harbour on the beautiful southern coast of Brittany. Explore the attractive village of Pont Aven, best known for its association with the post-impressionist painter Paul Gaugin, or perhaps head to Carnac to see its mysterious standing stones that stretch in rows for more than a mile.

BREST, FRANCE - 23RD MAY 7:30AM - 5:00PM
quimper-brest.jpg

As France’s main naval port since 1631, Brest boasts a long maritime history. A maiden call for Voyager, it is also your gateway to Brittany’s oldest city, Quimper. Its most impressive building is the breathtaking Gothic St Corentin Cathedral.

ST MALO, FRANCE - 24TH MAY 8:00AM - 5:00PM
st-malo.jpg

Step ashore in the ancient walled city of St Malo, and make your way to its heart to see the stunning Gothic and Romanesque cathedral - maybe even climb its ramparts for wonderful views. While away some time on the enticing Emerald Coast beaches or choose to explore the island commune of Mont-St-Michel, home to an imposing monastery.

ROUEN, FRANCE - 25TH MAY 1.30PM (OVERNIGHT) - 26TH MAY 3:00AM
giverney-rouen.jpg

A maiden call at Rouen gives you the chance to follow in the footsteps of Richard the Lionheart, Joan of Arc and Gustave Flaubert - just some of the characters who have helped to shape the city’s rich history. Architectural treasures include the Notre Dame Cathedral with its ornate façade, the flamboyant style of the Saint Maclou Church and the beautifully decorated Palais de Justice. An overnight stay gives you the chance to explore at leisure or head to Giverny to discover the house and gardens of the artist Claude Monet.

HONFLEUR, FRANCE - 26TH MAY 9:00AM - 8:30PM
honfleur.jpg

Situated on the estuary of the River Seine, with historic slate-tiled buildings lining its picturesque quay is Honfleur, Voyager’s final port of call. Explore the town, many times captured on canvas by the likes of Claude Monet, Georges Seurat and Eugene Boudin.

PORTSMOUTH, ENGLAND - 27TH MAY 8:00AM

BRIAN HEALEY
brian-healey.jpg

For much of his life, both at home and abroad, Brian has pursued parallel careers as a teacher of foreign languages and as a professional artist. He claims no credit for the latter, maintaining this is entirely due to the genes he inherited from his father! Combine this with his passion for music, architecture, travel and the sea and you have something approaching the man. Nothing inspires him more, however, than the thrill and the challenge of helping others and the opportunity to instil in them his own unfeigned passion for learning and discovery.

BRIGADIER MIKE SHAW

Mike Shaw was a regular soldier for 30 years rising to command a field force brigade after prior experience in Arctic operations and technical intelligence. Following tours as a director in the MoD’s Central Staffs, he retired early to concentrate on his principal interests of history and travel. Aside from a keen understanding of military and naval matters, as an ocean yachtsman he has a practical understanding of early navigational techniques and how trading links developed across the world’s oceans in the Age of Sail. When not travelling independently or leading battlefield themed series of courses for mature audiences within the Adult Recreational Colleges’ network and on the cruise circuit where all his lectures are tailored to provide historical background for the cruise in progress.
