CAPE TOWN, SOUTH AFRICA - 1st April (overnight) - 2nd April 6PM
cape-town-kirstenbosch.jpg

As dramatic locations go, few places in the world top Cape Town, with the magnificent flat-topped Table Mountain providing a stunning backdrop. From pristine coastlines and countryside bursting with exotic flora to cosmopolitan shopping malls and streets showcasing an eclectic mix of architectural styles, there is much to discover as you overnight in port. You could take a cable car up the mountain or visit Robben Island, a place of banishment and imprisonment during the years of apartheid.

AT SEA 3rd April
LUDERITZ, NAMIBIA - 4th April 7AM - 6PM
luderitz-namibia.jpg

Luderitz is nestled between the dusty Namib Desert and the South Atlantic coast. Purchased by German merchant Adolf Luderitz in 1883, it began life as a trading post and an alternative destination for German settlers who, at the time, were heading to North America in droves. The town enjoyed its heyday when diamonds were discovered in nearby Kolmanskop but when more accessible gems were found elsewhere, it became a ghost town. Today this abandoned site, where time seems to have stood still, is slowly being reclaimed by the shifting desert sands.

WALVIS BAY, NAMIBIA - 5th April 12:30PM - 6th April 6PM
walvis-bay-namibia.jpg

Nature lovers and seekers of peace and quiet will find a haven in Walvis Bay. Situated at a wide, picturesque lagoon and surrounded by salt flats, it is one of the most important wetlands of Southern Africa and is the hibernation area for thousands of migatory birds. ‘Dune 7’ is the highest sand dune in the region, and anyone who makes the climb will be rewarded with spectacular views.

AT SEA 7th April - 9th April
JAMESTOWN, ST HELENA - 10th April 8AM - 6PM
jamestown-st-helena.jpg

The remote island of St Helena was discovered by the Portuguese in 1502 and became a bustling port of vital importance to the East India Company’s trade routes. It was also home to Napoleon Bonaparte, exiled here until his death in 1821. Scenically spectacular, step ashore to marvel at verdant hillsides, steep, vegetation-filled valleys and high cliffs of volcanic rock rising from the sea.

AT SEA 11th April - 12th April
GEORGETOWN, ASCENSION - 13th April 8AM - 5:30PM
georgetown-ascention-island.jpg

Ascension is a speck of an island covering an area of 34 square miles – its lower slopes and western side made up of volcanic ash, and Green Mountain at its heart, which is lush and green. Serving mainly as a military base, laid-back Georgetown has a population of just 200.

AT SEA 14th April - 17th April
MINDELO, CAPE VERDE - 18th April 8AM - 6PM
mindelo-cape-verde.jpg

Voyager arrives at Cape Verde – a 10-island archipelago way out in the Atlantic to the west of Africa. Step ashore in Mindelo on São Vicente, which boasts a carnival atmosphere and a blend of Portuguese traditions and Brazilian style. Colonial architecture and historic monuments, lovely beaches and sweeping sand dunes are yours to discover as well as far-reaching sea views.

AT SEA 19th April - 20th April
GRAN CANARIA, CANARY ISLANDS - 21st April 8AM - 11PM
gran-canaria-las-palmas.jpg

Step ashore to discover Las Palmas, Gran Canaria’s vibrant capital, which is home to an abundance of historic buildings and monuments chronicling its 500-year history. UNESCO-listed Veguta is its historic heart, where you can discover the twintowered Santa Ana Cathedral. Las Palmas is also nestled between two charming bays and boasts beautiful beaches.

TENERIFE, CANARY ISLANDS - 22nd April 6AM

STEVE RAGNALL
Steve-Ragnallt.jpg

Steve has a lifetime’s love of the sea and its history. An Old Boy of his Grammar School, James King (1750-1784) had sailed as a lieutenant with Captain Cook on his fatal third Pacific voyage, leading Steve to immerse himself in tales of Pacific exploration and adventure. He has lectured extensively on maritime history around the world. A member of the Society for Nautical Research and the Captain Cook Society and a regular contributor to its Quarterly Journal, Steve is continuing research, with members of the society and various museums, into Cook’s world and the characters associated with Britain’s greatest navigator. He has worked in Hawaii on the site of Cook’s 1779 shorebase. His recent book “Better Conceiv’d than Describ’d: The Life & Times of Captain James King” is something of a culmination of that research and has been well received. Steve has worked extensively in local and regional radio as musician, writer and presenter. RYA Yatchmaster certified, he has extensive sailing experience, including passages on tall ships. He is proud to be an honorary member of the Merchant Navy Association. He is currently working with the National Register of Historic Ships to pursue an ambassadorial role.
