Richards Bay is South Africa’s largest port, which started life as a makeshift harbour set up during the Anglo-Boer War. It’s also your gateway to Zululand, home to one of Africa’s most fascinating tribal people and the magnificent Hluhluwe- Umfolozi – a prestigious game park. The world’s largest population of white rhinos can be found in the park, so make sure you look out for these fascinating creatures, along with the other members of the Big Five – lions, elephants, buffalos and leopards.

Perhaps head to the Shakaland Zulu Cultural Village, where you can experience the 19th century Zulu way of life, or simply stroll amongst the stalls of the bustling Victoria Street Market, where you can immerse yourself in the laid-back Afro-Oriental atmosphere. You could choose to head further afield to Tala Game Reserve, a fascinating wildlife sanctuary in the hills of a peaceful farming community.

PHINDA PRIVATE GAME RESERVE - 1-NIGHT PREMIUM TOUR FROM RICHARDS BAY

From Richards Bay you can enjoy a premium tour taking in Phinda Private Game Reserve, a fascinating wildlife haven in the Maputaland region of KwaZulu-Natal. Set amidst lush green scenery, the reserve boasts seven distinct ecosystems where a diverse array of species and intriguing landscapes await discovery. Set off on exciting game drives in a 4x4 open vehicle and keep a lookout for Africa’s famous ‘Big Five’ – lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, and rhino. A host of other species found in the park include cheetahs, antelope, warthogs, reedbucks, Tonga red squirrels, the extraordinary four-toed elephant-shrew and over 380 bird species. With the help of special spotlights, you may even witness nocturnal creatures, ranging from aardvarks to bush pigs and the greater bush baby, as they explore the reserve after dusk. Transfer from Richards Bay to Thanda Private Game Reserve in KwaZulu-Natal for an unforgettable adventure in the heart of the South African bush. An abundance of thrilling wildlife thrives in this 14,000-hectare habitat, including cheetah, hyena, warthog, wild dog and the endangered black rhino. You’ll stay in luxury in the Thanda Tented Camp – 14 spacious tents each with a private sun deck and en suite canvas bathroom. Starting with the Zulu conflict with the Boers in 1838, he will also cover the iconic battle Rorke’s Drift during the Anglo-Zulu war of 1879, the Boer War of 1899-1902

DR PHILIP LAWSON FRPS AND JANET EDWARDS FRPS are both award-winning photographers, exceptional in their abilities to convey their enthusiasm for photography and the world we see around us. Both Philip and Janet were lecturers in Computer Science at Loughborough University and are both Fellows of the Royal Photographic Society. Philip and Janet have uncovered an enthusiastic audience for their style of lecturing and passenger engagement on board cruises. Among their many accolades, Janet is a winner of the BBC Wildlife Award for Creative Nature Photography and Philip was awarded Travel Photographer of the Year by The Times for a portfolio collection of travel photographs from Cuba, China and the USA. Philip has a doctorate in Astrophysics from Leicester and retains a keen interest in Astronomy, Cosmology and Atmospheric Physics. Their recent photography of the Northern Lights keeps them busy in the cold winter months when not in warmer climes.
