Your holiday begins with an overnight stay in Piraeus. From here you can discover the iconic sites of cosmopolitan Athens, a city where ancient monuments sit alongside stylish, modern buildings. Explore the famous Acropolis, the Parthenon and the Temples of Zeus and Hephaestus or wander through the winding cobbled lanes of Plaka, the city’s enticing old quarter.

Voyager’s next stop is a call to the island of Zakynthos. This beautiful, green island boasts stunning beaches and a dramatic, rugged coastline. From a hillside position just outside Zakynthos Town, a Venetian fortress overlooks the capital. As you wander around the ancient remains here you’ll get a real feel for the history of the island.

Situated on a horseshoe bay by the glistening waters of the Ionian Sea, Sarandë is a charming city and your gateway to UNESCO-listed Butrint. The remains at this fascinating archaeological site span more than 2,000 years of Mediterranean history and include a well-preserved Greek theatre and impressive Roman baths.

Voyager’s next stop is an overnight stay in picture-perfect Dubrovnik, where you can take an exhilarating walk around the magnificent city walls or explore the UNESCO-listed old town. Here Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque churches, palaces and fountains intertwine with marble-paved squares and cobbled streets. You could also ride the cable car to the top of Mount Srd for sensational views of the city and shimmering Adriatic Sea.

In the elegant port town of Brindisi, highlights include an array of fascinating churches, two impressive castles and a Romanesque cathedral. Soak up the atmosphere here, or visit nearby Alberobello to admire the splendid UNESCO-listed Trulli houses. Built from limestone, these traditional dwellings feature distinctive white-washed conical roofs.

Sail into the impressive fortified Grand Harbour in Valletta and explore the architectural treasures that await you. The splendid St John’s Co- Cathedral and the Grand Master’s Palace are two must-see sights, whilst the beautiful Upper Barracca gardens offer incredible views out across the Grand Harbour. Take time to wander around the winding streets of the 4,000-year-old walled city of Mdina - ‘the silent city’ - where very few cars are allowed access. The relaxing atmosphere and stunning architecture of this old medieval town make it a wonderful place to explore.

SYRACUSE, SICILY - 4TH OCTOBER 7:00AM - 2:30PM

The historic city of Syracuse is your gateway to Taormina, a delightful town perched on a cliff top. Overlooking two wonderful sweeping bays, the views of Mount Etna are simply sublime. Taormina’s most famous monument is the horseshoe-shaped Greek theatre, or you can simply soak up the atmosphere in the town’s charming old quarter.

STROMBOLI SCENIC CRUISING, - 4TH OCTOBER

This evening Voyager cruises close to the island of Stromboli, one of the most active volcanoes in the world, with eruptions occurring two or three times an hour. From the comfort of the ship you might be treated to a colourful and thrilling show as glowing lava spews from its smoking summit.

PALERMO, SICILY - 5TH OCTOBER 8:00AM - 5:00PM

Voyager’s next port is Palermo, a first visit to Sicily’s vibrant capital city. A wealth of architecture, from Arabic to Art Nouveau, is waiting to be discovered here and at Palermo Cathedral, an array of architectural styles come together to create a vast place of worship. Today the cathedral also houses the Tesora Museum where you can admire the crown jewels of Sicily’s Kings and Queens.

NAPLES, ITALY - 6TH OCTOBER 7:30AM - 5:30PM

From the city of Naples, you can enjoy Italy’s spectacular Amalfi Coast. Naples is also your gateway to Pompeii, the famous Roman town frozen in time when Mount Vesuvius erupted in 79AD. You’ll gain an incredible insight into the last days of the people who lived here if you choose to wander the ancient streets and explore the fascinating collection of ruins.

CIVITAVECCHIA (ROME), ITALY - 7TH OCTOBER 7:00AM (OVERNIGHT) - 8TH OCTOBER

Voyager’s final port of call is Civitavecchia, gateway to Rome. Enjoy an extended stay here with plenty of time to discover Italy’s beautiful capital and everything it has to offer, including the spectacular Colosseum, the Spanish Steps and wonderful Trevi Fountain. Alternatively, head to the Etruscan town of Tarquinia for a chance to visit the UNESCO-listed necropolis with its tombs and incredible frescoes.

CHRISTOPHER WALTON

Christopher Walton spends much of the year in Italy with his Italian wife. He worked as a journalist in Cape Town during the apartheid era before a move to publishing in 1981. He has travelled to more than 110 countries, edited and published books on subjects as diverse as travel, law, medicine, history and cookery. Since his retirement he has been both a guest lecturer and port lecturer for Voyages of Discovery, specialising in Italian and South African history, food and culture.

Louise studied geography at Liverpool University, gained a postgraduate scholarship to study ecology and forest management at Harvard in the USA and returned to do her doctorate at Liverpool University, focusing on environmental management. For 35 years, her professional career was spent as a university geography lecturer, specialising in biogeography, wildlife ecology, environmental management, historical geography, tourism and sustainable development.

RON GATEPAIN

Ron Gatepain is an Architectural Historian, Chartered Surveyor, Builder and Building Engineer. A former Royal Marines Commando and Territorial Army Lieutenant Colonel, he is Chairman of the Lincolnshire Reserve Forces and Cadets Association.

Holding three degrees, two at masters’ level, Ron has worked at director level in Construction and Training and has been a visiting lecturer for a number of universities and colleges. He is the Editor of constructionsite.org.uk (Construction Learning Resources), the national resource website for FE & HE Institutions, and maintains the www.famous-historic-buildings.org.uk website. He has written a number of books, magazine articles, distance learning modules and online study units and is a Publishing Partner with the Encyclopaedia Britannica, contributing on Historic Sites & Buildings.

A member of the Historical Association and the Society of Architectural Historians, Ron regularly gives talks for special interest groups and cruise ships throughout the world.
