PORT LOUIS, MAURITIUS - 17TH JANUARY (OVERNIGHT) - 18TH JANUARY 7:00PM
port-louis-mauritius-pamplemousses.jpg

There’s a marvellous mix of African, Indian, European and Oriental influences in culturally diverse Port Louis. Mauritius’ capital was first colonised by the Dutch in 1638, then populated over the next few centuries by traders, merchants and planters, and their slaves. Discover the tea and sugar plantations on which Mauritius was built or choose to visit Pamplemousses Botanical Gardens to marvel at incredible flora.

AT SEA 19TH JANUARY - 20TH JANUARY
PORT VICTORIA, SEYCHELLES - 21ST JANUARY 1:00PM (OVERNIGHT FOR 2 NIGHTS) - 23RD JANUARY 5:00AM
port-victoria-seychelles.jpg

After a relaxing cruise on the Indian Ocean you’ll arrive in the beautiful Seychelles. Few capitals can claim a more stunning backdrop than Port Victoria on Mahé, which is ringed by lofty mountains and home to some of the best beaches in the Seychelles. The largest of this 115-island archipelago and the most populous, it’s a great place to mingle with the locals. An extended stay gives you plenty of time to relax on the beach and explore – the cathedral, State House and Botanical Gardens are notable highlights.

PRASLIN, SEYCHELLES - 23RD JANUARY 8:45AM (OVERNIGHT) - 24TH JANUARY 6:30AM
praslin-seychelles.jpg (1)

Another of the Seychelles’ dream destinations is Praslin, where an overnight stay gives you the chance to adapt to the islanders’ slow pace of life. Explorers will head to the UNESCO-listed Vallée de Mai, with its unique and coveted coco de mer palms and many other rare species of plants.

LA DIGUE, SEYCHELLES - 24TH JANUARY 8:00AM - 5:00PM
la-digue-seychelles.jpg (1)

Praslin’s tiny neighbour, the island of La Digue is no more than four square miles in size, so a day here gives ample time to explore to your heart’s content. Revisit days gone by at a plantation house, enjoy a sedate catamaran cruise or laze on beaches where huge rock formations add a touch of drama to the white sands and turquoise waters.

AT SEA 25TH JANUARY - 27TH JANUARY
MALÉ, MALDIVES - 28TH JANUARY 7:00AM (OVERNIGHT) - 29TH JANUARY 6:30PM
male-maldives.jpg

An idyllic island nation comprising 26 coral atolls and nearly 2,000 stunning islands, the Maldives are a dream come true. This is the ultimate beach destination, where whiter-than-white sand and glistening azure waters teeming with exotic marine life offer scenes of picture-postcard perfection. Drift away from the beach to discover monuments to Male’s proud history – maybe choose to start with the Sultan’s Palace or Hukuru Miskiy Mosque.

AT SEA 30TH JANUARY
COLOMBO, SRI LANKA - 31ST JANUARY 7:00AM (OVERNIGHT) - 1ST FEBRUARY
colombo-sri-lanka.jpg

The small island of Sri Lanka has it all – from sun-drenched beaches and rolling tea plantations to glittering temples and ancient ruins. A city of contrasts, Colombo is its bustling capital, where one moment you’ll be gazing at grand colonial mansions and the next browsing the wares spread on the floor before you at hectic flea markets.

Voyages of Discovery provide all of our passengers with detailed descriptions of all their excursions ahead of their cruise. They will all be available to Pre Book and a Cruise Booklet will be sent to you 3 months ahead of your sailing date

INDIA’S GOLDEN TRIANGLE 4 NIGHT POST-CRUISE EXTENSION

01-05 FEBRUARY 2018

This wonderful journey into the Mughal heart of India will provide an inspiring start or finish to your cruise holiday. Begin in Delhi – the intriguing cultural and historical centre of India’s past and future was built more than 450 years ago by a succession of empires, first the Hindu and Muslim dynasties, followed by the powerful Mughal dynasty, which ruled until the British took control. A city tour contrasts the walled city of Old Delhi with the burgeoning 21St century skyline of New Delhi with highlights including Raj Ghat, Jama Masjid, Humanyun’s Tomb, Qutub Minar, Red Fort, India Gate, the Parliament Building and the President’s residence. In the state of Uttar Pradesh in northwest India, Agra was developed by virtue of its location on major trade routes and waterways. The Sultan of Delhi settled in Agra in 1492 making it his capital, renovating its ancient fort and ruling the city until the Mughal dynasty came to power in 1526. From here discover Fatehpur Sikiri, the ceremonial capital built to celebrate the birth of Emperor Akbar’s son but destined to become a ghost town overnight. Contrast its delicate Hindu and Islamic styles with the imposing walls of Agra Fort – the seat and stronghold of the Mughal Empire under successive generations. The timeless Taj Mahal counts among man’s proudest creations and is undoubtedly one of the world’s greatest wonders. A glorious blend of mosaics, marble and gold, it is renowned for its architectural magnificence and aesthetic beauty. Surrounded by rugged hills each crowned with a formidable fort, Jaipur presides over the fascinating Rajasthani desert state and its people. Beautiful palaces and forts of yesteryear are now living monuments of the ‘pink city’, while the magnificent 17th century Amber Fort commands a hilltop setting and is home to the Temple of Kali, the Palace of Mirrors and the Hall of Pleasures.

SRI LANKA’S WORLD HERITAGE 4 NIGHT POST-CRUISE EXTENSION

01-05 FEBRUARY 2018

Sri Lanka is one of Asia’s richest treasure troves, boasting no fewer than seven amazing UNESCO listed World Heritage Sites. In the heart of this island country, the extraordinary site of Sigiriya – the ‘Lion Rock’ – is considered by some to be the eighth wonder of the world. The lofty rock dominating the neighbouring plateau consists of an ancient castle used by King Kasyapa as a hideout in the 5th century as he sought to keep out of sight of his vengeful brother. The complex includes moats, a gallery of frescoes painted on the rock face, water gardens that extend hundreds of metres out from the base of the rock and the impressive Lion Gate. At one time this stairway led through the jaws of a stone lion but all that remains now are two huge paws. Sacred to the Buddhist world, Anuradhapura was the first capital of Sri Lanka. Established in the 5th century BC, it was considered the greatest monastic city of the ancient world. At its peak it was home to dozens of monasteries housing thousands of monks. Scattered throughout the city wonderful ruins give a fascinating insight into the history of the Sri Lankan civilisation. Polonnaruwa was the second capital, and the archaeological treasures to be found here give a good idea of how the city looked in its heyday. A further highlight is the Dambulla Rock Temple and the famous Dambulla Caves – the largest and best preserved cave temple complex in Sri Lanka. Many impressive statues carved in living rock and paintings relating to Lord Buddha and his life enrich what is one of the oldest Buddhist shrines in Sri Lanka.

STEVE RAGNALL
Steve-Ragnallt.jpg

Steve has a lifetime’s love of the sea and its history. An Old Boy of his Grammar School, James King (1750-1784) had sailed as a lieutenant with Captain Cook on his fatal third Pacific voyage, leading Steve to immerse himself in tales of Pacific exploration and adventure. He has lectured extensively on maritime history around the world. A member of the Society for Nautical Research and the Captain Cook Society and a regular contributor to its Quarterly Journal, Steve is continuing research, with members of the society and various museums, into Cook’s world and the characters associated with Britain’s greatest navigator. He has worked in Hawaii on the site of Cook’s 1779 shorebase. His recent book “Better Conceiv’d than Describ’d: The Life & Times of Captain James King” is something of a culmination of that research and has been well received. Steve has worked extensively in local and regional radio as musician, writer and presenter. RYA Yatchmaster certified, he has extensive sailing experience, including passages on tall ships.
