From Nauplion you can take in the ruins of Ancient Mycenae, the legendary home of Agamemnon.

Admire the wonderfully preserved amphitheatre at Aspendos, one of the finest in Asia Minor, and discover Perge, a wealthy city in Roman times where St Paul preached his first sermon in AD46.

Patmos, the island where St John wrote his Book of Revelation, has long been a place of pilgrimage for Christians. In the early 1980s Patmos was declared a ‘Holy Island’ by the Greek government and today you can discover the island’s UNESCO-listed sacred sites, the Monastery of St John the Divine and the Cave of the Apocalypse. Alternatively, why not explore the charming little port of Skala, where you can relax and enjoy a drink in one of the many waterfront tavernas.

It’s also your gateway to the legendary ruins at Troy, a mustsee for anyone with an interest in the tales of the Trojan Wars and the Gallipoli peninsula, where you can reflect on the poignant reminders of the tragic Allied campaign of the First World War.

Thessaloniki is a fascinating city with a history spanning more than two millennia. It reigned the Byzantine Empire alongside Constantinople - now known as Istanbul - and today almost all the monuments in the enchanting upper town of Ano Poli are UNESCO-listed. From Thessaloniki you can visit Vergina where excavations have uncovered remains of a lavish Macedonian palace and the tombs and treasures of ancient kings.

From Piraeus, Athens’ ancient treasures await. With its past very much in evidence, the city also boasts a vibrant culture. Marvel at the Acropolis, a cluster of ancient buildings which include the famous Parthenon temple and admire the Panathenaic Stadium, host venue of the first modern Olympic Games. Linger over findings at the city’s museums or perhaps experience Plaka, the city’s attractive old quarter with its cobbled streets and Neoclassical architecture.

CANON DR ANNE DAVISON (NADFAS)

Anne has had a life-long interest in history and the religions of the world. This led to studying both topics for her first Degree and later for her Doctorate. For many years she was Adviser in Inter Religious Relations with the Church of England. She was also Vice Moderator of the World Council of Churches in Geneva and has sat on numerous advisory bodies for Inter Religious Relations. Programme for young Jews, Christians and Muslims between Jerusalem and East London and in recognition of her work in inter-religious relations was made a Lay Canon of Chelmsford Cathedral. She is a Visiting Lecturer at various universities and regularly lectures throughout the UK and on cruise ships. She is also an accredited lecturer with the National Association of Fine Arts Societies. Anne is author of several books including From the Medes to the Mullahs: a history of Iran and The Holy Roman Empire: power politics and papacy.

MAJOR GENERAL STEPHEN CARR-SMITH

Major General Stephen Carr-Smith spent 33 years in the British Army at the height of the Cold War; his final seven years were serving in NATO, helping develop the “New NATO” after the demise of the Warsaw Pact and the USSR. On leaving the Army, he worked for a company providing security and mine clearance services in remote and hostile countries; was the Senior Military Advisor to an operational analysis company owned by British Aerospace; and was the Chairman of a company developing opportunities to marry-up Russian technology with western finance and production. From 1999 to 2006 - he was the Ombudsman for Estate Agents, a national appointment dealing with redress and financial compensation for buyers and sellers of residential property throughout the UK. Over the last eight years, he has been a speaker on cruise ships. He specialises in historical events that are geographically relevant to the particular cruise. On this cruise, he will be speaking about: the Gallipoli Campaign of 1915 (the biggest British disaster of WW1); the Trojan War; Alexander the Great, and the legendary Greek hero, Hercules.
