An important seaport of the ancient Tamil Pandyan Kingdom, it was taken over by the Portuguese in 1548, captured by the Dutch in 1658 and ceded to the British in 1825. INDIA’S GOLDEN TRIANGLE 4 NIGHT PRE-CRUISE EXTENSION

28 JANUARY 2018 - 01 FEBRUARY 2018

This wonderful journey into the Mughal heart of India will provide an inspiring start or finish to your cruise holiday. Begin in Delhi – the intriguing cultural and historical centre of India’s past and future was built more than 450 years ago by a succession of empires, first the Hindu and Muslim dynasties, followed by the powerful Mughal dynasty, which ruled until the British took control. A city tour contrasts the walled city of Old Delhi with the burgeoning 21St century skyline of New Delhi with highlights including Raj Ghat, Jama Masjid, Humanyun’s Tomb, Qutub Minar, Red Fort, India Gate, the Parliament Building and the President’s residence. In the state of Uttar Pradesh in northwest India, Agra was developed by virtue of its location on major trade routes and waterways. The Sultan of Delhi settled in Agra in 1492 making it his capital, renovating its ancient fort and ruling the city until the Mughal dynasty came to power in 1526. From here discover Fatehpur Sikiri, the ceremonial capital built to celebrate the birth of Emperor Akbar’s son but destined to become a ghost town overnight. Contrast its delicate Hindu and Islamic styles with the imposing walls of Agra Fort – the seat and stronghold of the Mughal Empire under successive generations. The timeless Taj Mahal counts among man’s proudest creations and is undoubtedly one of the world’s greatest wonders. A glorious blend of mosaics, marble and gold, it is renowned for its architectural magnificence and aesthetic beauty. Surrounded by rugged hills each crowned with a formidable fort, Jaipur presides over the fascinating Rajasthani desert state and its people. Beautiful palaces and forts of yesteryear are now living monuments of the ‘pink city’, while the magnificent 17th century Amber Fort commands a hilltop setting and is home to the Temple of Kali, the Palace of Mirrors and the Hall of Pleasures.

SRI LANKA’S WORLD HERITAGE 4 NIGHT PRE-CRUISE EXTENSION

28 JANUARY 2018 - 01 FEBRUARY 2018

Sri Lanka is one of Asia’s richest treasure troves, boasting no fewer than seven amazing UNESCO listed World Heritage Sites. In the heart of this island country, the extraordinary site of Sigiriya – the ‘Lion Rock’ – is considered by some to be the eighth wonder of the world. The lofty rock dominating the neighbouring plateau consists of an ancient castle used by King Kasyapa as a hideout in the 5th century as he sought to keep out of sight of his vengeful brother. The complex includes moats, a gallery of frescoes painted on the rock face, water gardens that extend hundreds of metres out from the base of the rock and the impressive Lion Gate. At one time this stairway led through the jaws of a stone lion but all that remains now are two huge paws. Sacred to the Buddhist world, Anuradhapura was the first capital of Sri Lanka. Established in the 5th century BC, it was considered the greatest monastic city of the ancient world. At its peak it was home to dozens of monasteries housing thousands of monks. Scattered throughout the city wonderful ruins give a fascinating insight into the history of the Sri Lankan civilisation. Polonnaruwa was the second capital, and the archaeological treasures to be found here give a good idea of how the city looked in its heyday. A further highlight is the Dambulla Rock Temple and the famous Dambulla Caves – the largest and best preserved cave temple complex in Sri Lanka. Many impressive statues carved in living rock and paintings relating to Lord Buddha and his life enrich what is one of the oldest Buddhist shrines in Sri Lanka.

KERALA’S TIMELESS BACKWATERS

1 NIGHT PREMIUM TOUR FROM COCHIN

Fringing the coast of Kerala and winding far inland is a vast network of lagoons, lakes, rivers and canals. A unique geological formation, the Kerala backwaters is a world of its own with the lifestyle of the locals defined and shaped by the waterways. Breathtakingly beautiful, it is a world that is both tranquil and alluring and this overnight tour on board a traditional houseboat promises to be the trip of a lifetime. To glide gently through the labyrinth of meandering waterways is a marvellous experience with the simple, unique pleasures that it offers. Life on board will be interrupted by delightful surprises. Flocks of graceful ducks, women in canoes selling tender coconuts, the song of the cuckoo and small restaurants on the banks that offer delicious kapa and fried karimeen – boiled tapioca and a tasty fresh water fish. People live on small slivers of land just big enough to accommodate their thatched huts and boats. It is common to see people fishing, washing clothes and bathing along the banks that are dotted with churches and temples. Look out for traders carrying their wares from door to door in small boats and the boatmen who ferry people to the nearest road services. The views are resplendent with stunning beauty as narrow canals with thick foliage open into wider vistas of lakes with endless views of tranquil waters. The palm-fringed shorelines sometimes make way for lush, green paddy fields that make the backdrop awe-inspiring. The backwaters are a haven for many different types of rare birds including cormorants, parakeets, kingfishers and darters. The sheer tranquillity, simplistic lifestyle and extraordinary nature combine for the most magical of experiences.
