Follow one of the most beautiful stretches of coastline in the world – South Africa’s magnificent Garden Route – and discover a series of charming towns set amidst areas of outstanding natural beauty. Enjoy an orientation tour of Port Elizabeth, known as the ‘friendliest city’ on the sunshine coast, before driving past the Tsitsikamma Mountains and across the Groot River and Bloukrans Passes. Knysna lies on a lagoon, the mouth of which is guarded by two promontories known as the Knysna Heads. After a ferry trip across the lagoon, step aboard a 4x4 Unimog vehicle, complete with trailer, and journey to a fantastic viewpoint, from where you can take in spectacular views. You could join an optional walk along the scenic coastal path, passing Milkwood forests, sandstone cliffs and ancient Khoisan sea caves. A delicious buffet lunch at the reserve’s restaurant completes this authentic eco-experience. The Monkeyland Sanctuary has captured the hearts of visitors in its efforts to rehabilitate previously caged primates. Safaris enable guests to leave with a greater understanding of the primates of the world and the threats they are facing. The stunning Wilderness Lakes Area is simply breathtaking. You’ll cross the scenic Outeniqua Pass, named after the Hottentot Tribe who formerly lived there, to reach Oudtshoorn – the ‘ostrich capital of the world’. Louise studied geography at Liverpool University, gained a postgraduate scholarship to study ecology and forest management at Harvard in the USA and returned to do her doctorate at Liverpool University, focusing on environmental management. For 35 years, her professional career was spent as a university geography lecturer, specialising in biogeography, wildlife ecology, environmental management, historical geography, tourism and sustainable development.

JAMES PARRY

Is a freelance writer, editor and consultant specialising in the arts, architecture and history of the Middle East and the Arab world. Other interests include wildlife and landscape history. He has been Assistant Director for The British Council in Tanzania and then in the Sultanate of Oman. James has contributed many articles to magazines and journals including Apollo, Arts & the Islamic World and Canvas, and has written several books, including Global Safari (October 2007). 

PROFESSOR IAN BECKETT

Professor Ian Beckett retired as Professor of Military History at the University of Kent in 2015. He remains an Honorary Professor at Kent, and is also a Professorial Research Fellow in the Humanities Research Institute of the University of Buckingham. Previously, he has held chairs in both the US and the UK, and was Chairman of the Council of the Army Records Society from 2000 to 2014. A Fellow of the Royal Historical Society, he has been Secretary of the Buckinghamshire Military Museum since 1985. He is internationally known for his work on the First World War, and the history of the British Army. He has led tours to the battlefields of the Anglo-Boer and Anglo-Zulu Wars.
