PORTSMOUTH, ENGLAND - 25TH JUNE 6:00PM

GUERNSEY, CHANNEL ISLANDS - 26TH JUNE 8:00AM - 5:00PM
guernsey.jpg

Guernsey’s capital St Peter Port is home to one of Europe’s most picturesque harbours. Step ashore and take a stroll through delightful cobbled streets and perhaps visit Castle Cornet. Standing guard over the town for more than 800 years, it’s now home to five fascinating museums which document the island’s past. For more historic insight why not head to La Vallette Underground Military Museum to learn about the island’s German Occupation during the Second World War.

AT SEA 27TH JUNE
LA CORUÑA, SPAIN - 28TH JUNE 8:00AM - 6:00PM
la-coruna-spain.jpg (1)

Take time in La Coruña’s Old Town to appreciate the magnificent squares, medieval quarter and attractive promenade. The 2nd century Tower of Hercules lighthouse is perhaps the most famous landmark of the town, which is also your gateway to Santiago de Compostela. This is the culmination of the Way of St James, where a spectacular 12th century cathedral houses the tomb of the apostle.

AT SEA 29TH - 30TH JUNE
PRAIA DA VITORIA, THE AZORES - 1ST JULY 8:00AM - 8:00PM
terceira-azores.jpg

Begin your exploration of the Azores - an archipelago of nine verdant islands set in the Atlantic Ocean between Portugal and North America. Your first port of call is Praia da Vitoria, located in a large bay on the island of Terceira. Here you’ll discover a long, sandy beach and some notable historic buildings. The island’s capital Angra do Heroismo features one of Portugal’s best public libraries and retains some important private art collections.

HORTA, THE AZORES - 2ND JULY 7:00AM - 6:00PM
whale-azures.jpg

Known as the ‘Blue Island’ due to the numbers of hydrangeas that bloom here in the summer months, Faial is your next stop in the captivating Azores. The island’s lively capital is Horta, a haven for whalewatchers and sailors, who stop here during their voyages across the North Atlantic. Discover the power of the last major volcanic activity in 1957 as you marvel at the vast crater of the now extinct volcano from which the island originated, in an area that resembles the surface of the moon.

PONTA DELGADA, THE AZORES - 3RD JULY 8:00AM - 5:00PM
sete-cidades-ponta-delgada.jpg

The island of Sao Miguel is considered by many to be the Azores’ crowning glory, where rich, volcanic soil yields abundant crops of tobacco, tea, figs and pineapples. Its capital is home to diverse sights, from turn-of-the-century architecture to a superyacht-lined marina but it’s the famous Sete Cidades twin lakes that steal the limelight. One seemingly emeraldgreen and the other deep blue, they are located in the biggest extinct volcanic crater in the archipelago and a must-see.

AT SEA 4TH JULY
FUNCHAL, MADEIRA - 5TH JULY 8:30AM - 6.30PM
funchal-gardens.jpg

The ‘Floating Garden of the Atlantic’, Madeira was discovered in 1419 by Portuguese explorers venturing south. Make sure you’re on deck as you approach Funchal’s harbour, a natural amphitheatre where pretty, red-roofed houses dot the hillsides and moutains offer a dramatic backdrop. Named after the fennel that once grew here in profusion, the island’s capital boasts a cosmopolitan air today - step ashore to admire a landscape strewn with lush foliage and colourful blooms.

AT SEA 6TH JULY
LISBON, PORTUGAL - 7TH JULY 8:00AM - 5:00PM
lisbon.jpg

Voyager’s final destination is Lisbon, a characterful city spread across seven steep hills. Once home to some of the world’s greatest explorers, such as Vasco da Gama and Prince Henry the Navigator, it is here that Portugal’s ‘Age of Discoveries’ is celebrated. See the exceptional Monument to the Discoveries, erected in honour of the achievements of seafaring pioneers, and marvel at the city’s iconic Belem Tower, a 16th century defence system and the starting point for many voyages of discovery.

STEPHEN SMITH

A lifelong interest in comic songs began for Stephen Smith when his mother – a true Cockney – would sing the old London songs she learned from her parents. He became involved in amateur dramatics at school and elsewhere, and usually landed the comedy parts. He emerged from the years normally devoted to education with qualifications in drama, music and English.

In his talks, he presents a personal tour of the songs that make him laugh. He looks at comedy and novelty music that has tickled audiences since 1900. From clever lyrics and smart topical references to corny gags set to corny tunes, if it makes him laugh he’ll tell you about it. He frequently interrupts his discourse to perform examples of the songs, accompanying himself on guitar. You’ll hear some old favourites, some new songs, and much in between, all intended to hit you squarely on the funny bone.
