The interior of the main island is a mixture of picturesque paddy fields and jungle-clad hills. Rising almost 100 metres above Yangon, the Shwedagon Pagoda is thought to date to the time of Gautama Buddha. Adorned with gold, encrusted with diamonds and said to hold strands of Buddha’s hair, it is the country’s most revered shrine. An extended stay in this cosmopolitan city, which began life as a small fishing village and was once the political hub of British Burma, offers plentiful opportunities. View the magnificent 70-metre long reclining Buddha in Kyaukhtatgyi You might choose to wander the warren of alleys and shops set amongst grand colonial architecture in Bogyoke Aung San Market. This cruise also gives you the unique chance to visit to Bagan, where more than 2,000 Buddhist temples, pagodas, stupas and ruins – mostly built between the 11th and 13th centuries – dot the plain.

With a large natural harbour and strategic position along the East-West sea trade routes, Colombo was popular with traders 2,000 years ago and became the island’s capital when Sri Lanka was ceded to the British Empire in 1815. Today it is a modern city where reminders of its colonial past contrast with high-rises and malls. Turn the pages of history at the marvellous National Museum, or venture inland to meet the elephants of Pinnawela and learn more about these gentle giants at the world-renowned sanctuary.

SRI LANKA’S WORLD HERITAGE - 4-NIGHT EXTENSION

Extend your holiday at the end of your cruise with this 4-night tour which introduces a host of Sri Lanka’s ancient treasures. Discover the extraordinary site of Sigiriya, a complex including moats, a gallery of frescoes painted on the rock face, water gardens that extend hundreds of metres out from the base of the rock and the impressive Lion Gate. BAGAN TEMPLES - 1-NIGHT PREMIUM TOUR FROM YANGON

Enjoy an orientation tour of Myanmar’s capital Yangon and a visit to the Shwedagon Pagoda, which towers almost 98 metres over the cityscape. Smothered in gold and encrusted with 4,531 diamonds – with the largest a single 76 carat gem – it is a mesmerising sight. On day two, you’ll fly to Bagan, one of the richest archaeological sites in Asia, where around 2,000 monumental stupas dot the landscape. Take in spectacular views from one of the pagodas, before visiting the Anandar Temple. Considered the finest surviving masterpiece of Mon architecture, it is also the most revered of the Bagan temples. You’ll also see the ornate Sulamani Temple, the Shwezigon Pagoda and Dhammayangyi Temple, which is Bagan’s largest shrine and features fine brickwork and an intriguing history. DR PHILIP LAWSON FRPS AND JANET EDWARDS FRPS are both award-winning photographers, exceptional in their abilities to convey their enthusiasm for photography and the world we see around us. Both Philip and Janet were lecturers in Computer Science at Loughborough University and are both Fellows of the Royal Photographic Society. Philip and Janet have uncovered an enthusiastic audience for their style of lecturing and passenger engagement on board cruises. Among their many accolades, Janet is a winner of the BBC Wildlife Award for Creative Nature Photography and Philip was awarded Travel Photographer of the Year by The Times for a portfolio collection of travel photographs from Cuba, China and the USA. Philip has a doctorate in Astrophysics from Leicester and retains a keen interest in Astronomy, Cosmology and Atmospheric Physics. Their recent photography of the Northern Lights keeps them busy in the cold winter months when not in warmer climes.
